THIRD GENERATION

10. Phillip CHAVE died in 1683 in Uplowman. He Administration in 1683 in Court of Archdeaconry of Exeter. He was buried on 17 Jun 1683 in Uplowman Churchyard. (4) He has reference number Ch@@Imxx@@IP1. Possibly a son of John CHAVE the Elder (son of Phillippe CHAVE) andbroth er to Edward who married Rebeckah. Edward had a sister Elizabethbpt 1665.

In the will of Phillip's son, John (last of the male sibblings)writt en in 1723 and very detailled - it mentions a cousin George Hanford w ho is to be a guardian of his children along with a brotherin law etc. Th ere is a marriage recorded between a George Hanford andElizabeth CHA VE at Uplowman in March 1712. If this is the Elizabethwho was bpt in 16 65 she would have been about 47 when married -unlikely but possible.

There is evidence in other CHAVE wills that the Hanford family weresolicit ors or similar, and that their partners were Chaves - see thewill of Jo hn CHAVE the Younger and the indenture of Phillippe CHAVE,and details in T ree Three.

If this is correct, it would make George a cousin of the testator Jo hn IF Edward (Elizabeth's father) was a brother of John's father Philip.Th is Philip was married in 1669, so must have been born around 1650 atthe la test. Edward's son John had a daughter Elizabeth would wouldhave be en of a more marriagable age in 1712 so she may be the wife ofGeorge Hanfo rd. But balanced against that is the distant age gap tothe other childr en of Edward to fit that generation, and the questionof why a more "junio r" member of the family would be chosen for therole. Also the name of Phil ip would be consistent with being theeldest son named for a grandfathe r, ie Edward's elder brother.

In comparing the wills of the two strands of the family, it is clearthat t his line has the most property by far, but that there areimportant membe rs of the other line, especially with respect to JohnChave the Elder. Th is would be consistent with the sibling theory, andthat John CHAVE the Eld er was the father of Philip.
