Details from son William's will, but other relationships (references to ki nsman,
cousins etc) not yet identified.
Arthur CULME (wife Susanna may have been actual relation as tenement Co mb Land
in Tiverton left to her and not to her husband, who he also descri bes as a cousin
and good friend). Their eldest three children are nam ed as Charles, Arthur and
Mary and all appear to be under 21 years when wi ll written).
Cousin (also kinsman) William Drew (released from debts bills bonds et c) has
a son James and 5 other children all apparently aged under 21 at ti me will written).
A Kinsman John Drew is also mentioned with a separate b equest of the same amount
as William Drew's children.
Cousin (also good friend) Henry Stevens.
Thomas Catford and Johan Catford who lived with him are mentioned and le ft a
bequest, and a field of wheat (field called Easter Broome) is le ft to John Morse
of Hockworthy.
Male CHAVE had the following children:

Hockworthy, Devon.(9) He died about 1685.
He signed a will about 1686.(10) He
owned in Huntsham & Hockworthy, Devon; Property: Stallengethorne.

number Ch@@Hm Ch@@Im. see will details below - also note in 1685 legal agreement
between Wm. War ren (see notes under miscellaneous and also property) and John
CHAVE 3 Ap ril 1685, previous documents had only mentioned Wm. CHAVE.
William's will was written 17th March 1684 (our 1685). Proved in PCC 3 Ma rch
1685 (our 1686).
Note there was proved in Exeter Archdeaconry Court in 1684 a will for a Wi lliam
CHAVE, Halberton. If this is the same person it would have had to ha ve been
proved within a fortnight of it being written, and also note th at one is William
CHAVE, Halberton, and the other William CHAVE, Hockworth y.

BUT MY READING OF THE LATIN TEXT (as opposed to the English transciptio n) gives
3 March 1685 which of course IS 1685 by OUR calendar.

Proved 3rd March 1686
In the name of God Amen. The seventeenth day of March one thousand six hun dred
eighty four I William CHAVE of Hockworthy in the County of Devon bei ng sick
and weak of body but of sound and perfect mind and memory prais ed be God for
the same revoking nullifying and making void all former a nd other wills by me
heretofore made in writing or otherwise do make and o rdain this my last will
and testament in manner and form following. Fir st I bequeath and remit my soul
unto Almighty God my Maker and Redeemer ho ping by the precious death and meritorious
passion of Jesus Christ my Savi our to receive free pardon and full remission
of all my sins and my bo dy to the earth to be interred according to Christian
burial by the ca re of my trustees hereinafter mentioned in the parish churchyard
of Hockwo rthy aforesaid so near the place where the body of my sister Thomasine
STE PHENS formerly deceased was buried as conveniently may be. Item I give a
nd bequeath unto the poor of the parish of Hockworthy the sum of twenty po unds
to lie for the good of the poor forever. And the interest there of to be distributed
yearly at Christmas by and at the discretion of the m inister churchwarden and
overseers of the poor of the said parish and the ir successors to such honest
poor people as have not relief from the paris h. Item I give and bequeath to
my two kinsmen Roger and Clement OXENHAM so ns of my sister Agnes OXENHAM the
sum of five and twenty pounds of lawf ul English money apiece to be paid to them
by my executors hereafter nam ed when they shall respectively attain the age
of thirty years and my wi ll and meaning is if either of them shall happen to
die before he accompli sh the said age that then the survivor shall receive the
said legacy of h im so deceased. Item I give and bequeath unto my kinswoman Susanna
MAUND ER daughter of my sister Johane the sum of ten pounds of lawful English
mo ney to be paid by my executors within one year of my decease. Item I gi ve
and bequeath unto the three older children of my cousin Arthur CUL ME of Tiverton
which are now living with vizt. Charles CULME Arthur CUL ME and Mary CULME the
sum of forty pounds to be paid by my executors herea fter named and equally divided
unto them as one of them shall accomplish t he age of one and twenty years. And
if it shall so happen that any or eith er of them shall happen to die before
he or they shall accomplish the a ge of one and twenty years then the legacy
or legacies of him her or th em so deceased shall be paid to the survivor or
survivors of them. It em I give and bequeath unto my cousin Susanna CULME wife
of the said Arth ur CULME all my right and interest in a certain tenement commonly
called C omb Land situate in Tiverton aforesaid now in the possession of one
Mary M ADGE widow. Item I give and bequeath unto the six children of my cousin
Wi lliam DEW the sum of sixty pounds of lawful English money to be paid th em
in manner following that is to say vizt. ten pounds apiece as they sha ll respectively
attain the age of one and twenty years. And if any or eith er of them shall happen
to die before they shall accomplish the said a ge of one and twenty years then
the legacy or legacies of him or them so d eceased shall be due and payable unto
the survivor or survivors of h im or them in manner aforesaid by my Executors
hereafter named. Item I gi ve and bequeath unto Thomas CATFORD and Johan CATFORD
that now live wi th me the sum of ten pounds apiece of lawful English money to
be pa id by my Executor within the space of one year next after my decease. It
em I give and bequeath unto my kinsman John DEW the sum of ten pounds of l awful
English money to be paid him when he shall be the age of thirty yea rs by my
Executors hereafter named. Item my will is and I hereby order th at my said Executors
hereafter nominated shall by the direction of my trus tees hereafter mentioned
expend and bestow in my funeral expenses a nd in a dinner to sustain my friends
that will be pleased to come to my fu neral the sum of threescore pounds of lawful
English money. Item I do gi ve unto my said kinsman William DEW all bills bonds
and debts and deman ds whatsoever that are or ever have been between us and do
by this last wi ll and testament forgive acquit and discharge unto the said William
DEW h is executors and administrators all debts demands and accounts whatsoev
er from the beginning of the world to this present time. Item I give and b equeath
unto John MORSE of Hockworthy aforesaid all my right and intere st in a certain
piece of wheat now standing growing and being in a certa in piece of ground called
the Easter Broome. Item I give and bequeath un to my cousin Henry STEVENS the
sum of twenty pounds to be paid by my execu tor within one year after my decease.
Item all the rest of my goods and ch attels not herein before given and bequeathed
my debts and legacies paid a nd funeral expenses discharged I give and bequeath
unto my cousin Willi am CHAVE son of my brother Phillip when he shall accomplish
the age of o ne twenty years but if it shall happen that my said kinsman William
CHA VE do die before he accomplish the aforesaid age of one and twenty yea rs
I do by this my last will and testament declare that my cousin James D EW and
my cousin Arthur CULME sons of the aforesaid Arthur CULME and Willi am DEW to
be whole and sole executors of this my last will and testamen t. Lastly I do
desire my good friends Henry STEPHENS and Arthur CULME afor esaid to be my trustees
and rulers of this my last will and testament a nd to do their best to see the
same duly and truly executed and for the ir pains and care they shall take in
and about the same I do give unto ea ch of them the sum of ten pounds. In witness
and testimony whereof I the s aid William CHAVE have hereunto set my hand and
